We are nearing the end of our five-year, $2 billion investment program, that will underpin the resilience and growth of our business. This program includes the new Metal Coating Line in Western Sydney providing additional capacity products like TRUECORE® steel and feed for our iconic COLORBOND® steel, along with the No.6 Blast Furnace reline and Plate Mill upgrade projects at our Port Kembla Steelworks, which will secure our long term steelmaking future and unlock growth opportunities. In the US, our leading mini-mill, North Star, is progressing its debottlenecking project to deliver an additional 300,000 tonnes of annual capacity, while in New Zealand, our new Electric Arc Furnace will deliver enhanced earnings resilience and cut the site’s greenhouse gas emissions in half.
Over the past 60 years, COLORBOND® steel has transformed the Australian built environment – growing to be the preferred roofing material for homeowners across Australia. COLORBOND® steel is supported by BlueScope’s globally recognised innovation centre based in Australia. Home to over 50 scientists, engineers, physicists and metallurgists, this team has delivered decades of breakthrough research and continuous investment, resulting in more than 500 patents in more than 23 countries.
BlueScope is collaborating to accelerate decarbonisation across the steel value chain.
NeoSmelt is a landmark joint venture bringing together BlueScope, BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy and Mitsui Iron Ore Development which aims to develop and validate a Direct Reduced Iron - Electric Smelting Furnace (DRI‑ESF) pathway capable of processing Pilbara iron ore into lower‑emissions molten iron. The proposed Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) pilot plant seeks to provide a long‑term alternative to traditional blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF‑BOF) steelmaking.
