Our Number 6 pit area in our Steel Treatment Department was previously backfilled and compacted with road base material which was purchased externally.
This process needed to be done once every 12-18 months.
The Steelmaking Engineers have now figured out a way to use refractory material from our Blast Furnace "Troughs" (the channels that the liquid metal and slag run through) to do the same job.
This has already resulted in significant cost savings, but most importantly, we're saving 145 tonnes of material that was previously going to landfill!
