Community update – Port Kembla Steelworks noise
BlueScope would like to apologise to residents who experienced elevated noise from the Port Kembla Steelworks over the weekend.
The noise was associated with the venting of low-pressure steam, which was required to maintain pressure within the Steelworks' interworks steam system and support safe site-wide operations while a number of equipment limitations were being managed.
Operational changes were made on Saturday evening to significantly reduce the level of venting and associated offsite noise. Our teams continue to closely monitor operations and are working to minimise the need for further venting while the relevant equipment issues are addressed.
We recognise that the level and duration of the noise experienced by some neighbouring residents was above what would normally be expected, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption this caused.
We are also reviewing the circumstances surrounding the event, including our internal notification and escalation processes, to identify any improvements that should be made.
