Recognising Human Rights Day


Today is Human Rights Day, this year focusing on the need to build back better after the pandemic by ensuring Human Rights are central to the recovery. 

On this day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

At BlueScope, Our Purpose is to create and inspire smart solutions in steel, to strengthen our communities for the future. And this reflects our intent to build strong communities, not only where we work and live but along our supply chains. BlueScope supports the UDHR and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and we actively protect and uphold the wellbeing and human rights of our people, and the people with whom we do business.

Our intent is not new.  For many years we have had processes in place to protect our people, and to require our suppliers to work to the same principles; we continue to formalise our approach and have recently introduced processes to conduct independent risk assessments of priority suppliers:

  • In protecting BlueScope people, our approach is guided by our Code of Conduct and our Statement on Human Rights.
  • Our Supplier Code of Conduct sets out BlueScope’s minimum standards for suppliers - they must support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights and ensure they are not complicit in any human rights abuses.
  • We assess our own sites, and monitor our suppliers, to help eliminate any risks of causing or contributing to modern slavery, including forced, compulsory and child labour. This year we released our first Modern Slavery Statement, required under the Australian Modern Slavery Act 2018.
  • We acknowledge Indigenous peoples as traditional owners of the land wherever we operate and are respectful of their traditions.

This approach to protecting the human rights of our people and those who work in our supply chains is demonstrated by two of our five sustainability outcomes, as described in our FY2020 Sustainability Report:

  • Safe and inclusive workplaces – We create safe, healthy, and inclusive workplaces that value diversity, inspire creativity, support capability and reflect the communities where we operate
  • Responsible products and supply chain – We foster responsibility and collaboration in our operations and supply chains to provide smarter steel solutions and support a circular steel economy
