Brad is BlueScope's in-house employment lawyer in Australia, who works closely with various stakeholders across a range of time zones. He spared a moment to give us some insights into his busy role.
What brought you to BlueScope in the first place?
I was initially seconded to BlueScope from a law firm. I was fortunate enough to be 'poached' by BlueScope, due to its need for a full-time, in-house employment lawyer. I wanted to join BlueScope for several reasons, including the complexity of the role (working with multiple business units across Australia), the high level of autonomy and workplace flexibility and BlueScope’s genuine commitment to its values (via Our Bond).
Tell us about your role at BlueScope and what you do each day.
I advise BlueScope Australian Steel Products, which comprises approximately 6000 employees within various businesses across Australia. I work closely with managers and executives to achieve legal, practical and commercially viable solutions for their respective businesses. I also deliver tailored training and coaching, conduct workplace investigations and negotiate enterprise agreements.
No one day is ever the same, which is one of the reasons why my job is so fulfilling and exciting.
What have been some of the most interesting challenges for you here?
My most interesting challenge at BlueScope has been continuously learning about such a complex and diverse business. The other has been balancing urgent, competing priorities of different business units in different time zones.
What would you say to people who are considering a role with the company?
BlueScope is a fantastic place to work. Our people are definitely our strength and our engaging workplace culture is testament to this. I encourage any prospective applicants to review Our Bond and join the team if this resonates with you.
