BlueScope provides lifeline to help prevent suicide
BlueScope has been a long-time sponsor and supporter of Lifeline in the Illawarra and South Coast of NSW.
Each year, Lifeline runs a recruitment drive for new volunteer telephone counsellors, and the BlueScope WIN Community Partners Program contributes to the volunteer training courses.
The 2016 recruitment drive launch at Port Kembla Steelworks Number 5 Blast Furnace was hosted by John Nowlan, General Manager Manufacturing, BlueScope ANZ.
‘’The sheer number of lives lost to suicide is confronting, and many lives are affected by those deaths,’’ John said. ‘’The amount of years of life lost as a result of these suicides has a large economic consequence too.
‘’We support Lifeline’s telephone crisis support training as it develops skills in local people to help others in the community.’’
Lifeline South Coast executive director Grahame Gould encouraged other businesses to take BlueScope’s lead.
‘’BlueScope Steel is making suicide prevention part of its business and it’s a great role model for other businesses,’’ he said.
More than 18,000 calls were answered by Lifeline South Coast volunteers last year.
Lifeline telephone crisis supporters are available 24-hours a day at 13 11 14.
